A Brief History & Information about Conyers, GA
Located about thirty minutes east of the city of Atlanta, Conyers GA has been a rapidly growing city for the last few decades. Many residents in the area love the convenience of having a major interstate system run through their city; Interstate 20. The interstate will take you into Atlanta, but also get you to many of the main surrounding areas of the city for work and play.
The city’s uptick in population began shortly after the summer of 1996. The Summer Olympic Games came to the city of Atlanta, and many events were held in at The Georgia International Horse Park. It is estimated that approximately 600,000 people visited the city of Conyers during the Olympic events. Equestrian events were the main attraction, but The Horse Park was also the site of the first ever mountain-bike competition, and the final two events of the pentathlon. The Summer Olympic games put Conyers and Rockdale County on the map, and it was shortly thereafter that many people began to relocate to the area.
The city was founded by Dr. W.D. Conyers who lived in Covington, GA at the time. The Dr gave deeded right of way to the railroad company to bring train transit to the area. This move proved to be a prosperous one, as many influential and wealthy people at the time began to move to the area. During this time, the city experienced a business boom. Many stores, shops, fine hotels, primary schools, a college, saloons, and even brothels were thriving in the area.
Sally Fanny Gleaton, who was from the city of Conyers, would become a prominent member of The Suffragette Movement. Mrs. Gleaton traveled the country and much of Europe with many well-known women, including Kit Hepburn, mother of Audrey Hepburn. These women fought tirelessly for women’s rights to vote. In 1915, Gleaton participated in the first suffragette parade in Atlanta. She marched behind a yellow car — an emblem of the movement because it was sold by a supporter, for unpaid taxes in protest of taxation without representation. A short time after, Gleaton bought the car and was often seen driving it around Conyers. Gleaton was also the first female pilot registered in the state of Georgia and performed a solo flight, which was unheard of during the time.
Olde Town Conyers, as it is referred to today, is still historically preserved with many unique businesses in the area. The Olde Town area was the hub of the train travel system at the time. One of the original locomotives known as “The Dinky” is still displayed near ‘The Depot’ and is part of Conyers’ Welcome Center.

The Monastery is a group of Cistercian Monks from Kentucky who hold daily worship services and make and sell their own goods to benefit The Monastery and its mission, many people come to the are to witness the lives of the monks, including school children who often take field trips here.
